Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal

Many stories in one: a documentary about the beginnings of the internet, online advertising, and awareness of personal data, but also about the most notorious personal data leak in contemporary pop culture. All the more controversial because it involved a database of personal data from Ashley Madison – a website for people actively seeking a partner to cheat on.

The early 2000s, the launch of most of the largest online businesses, at a time when an even greater lack of regulation and understanding of their operations allowed for the concealment of flaws in their backroom operations. In addition to revealing the history and consequences of this single leak, the documentary provides insight into the operations of large internet corporations. Statements from former employees and app users reveal the contradictions between users’ expectations and the promises and assurances of app owners regarding the basic security of their data.
